Medical Society Foundation Receives $50,000 Grant

The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation received a $50,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation to provide support to specialty healthcare services for the uninsured in San Diego County

The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation (SDCMSF) received a $50,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation to support an innovative program designed to provide specialty healthcare services for the uninsured in San Diego County. Now in existence for three years, Project Access San Diego (PASD) is supported by a network of over 600 local specialist physicians, 10 hospitals, 14 surgery centers and numerous ancillary service providers who donate their time and expertise to ensure the continued care of this segment of the population.

Through its flagship program (PASD), the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation has provided over $4 million in donated surgical services and specialty care consultation to more than 1,300 uninsured patients since the program's initiation in late 2008. Project Access patients are low-income adults who have no access to private health insurance through their employers, and are not eligible for public health benefits such as MediCal or CMS.
According to SDCMSF Executive Director Barbara Mandel, "The goal of Project Access San Diego aligns ideally with the funding priorities of the S. Mark Taper Foundation. We both strive to enhance the quality of people's lives in our local communities --- in this instance, we are providing critical healthcare services that the underinsured could not otherwise afford." The S. Mark Taper Foundation is a private family foundation established in 1989 and is headquartered in Los Angeles, CA.

SDCMSF was founded by the San Diego County Medical Society in 2005 to address the unmet healthcare needs of uninsured and underinsured San Diego County residents. The Foundation focuses on increasing healthcare access, improving health education and prevention, and supporting physicians and medical students to improve the quality of care in the community.
