Local Cancer Research Facility Promotes UV Safety Month in July

July is National UV Safety Month and as such Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), with locations in Northwest Arkansas, promotes UV health and awareness.

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of Cancer in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics. Ultraviolet (UV) rays, from sun exposure, are the leading cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and damaged skin.

However, there are preventative steps that can guard people against skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

The best ways to protect against skin cancers and diseases include; seeking shade between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (which are the hours that sun rays are typically strongest), using a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or greater on a daily basis, covering up with clothing (including hats and sunglasses) when going into the sun, avoiding burning, and avoiding tanning beds and tanning altogether, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

It is important to recognize the early signs of skin cancer in order to ensure successful treatment. The early signs that you should seek medical attention include; a raised bump (especially on the face or neck, hard red bumps on the face, neck, arm or hands, a dry patch of skin unable to be soothed by lotion, and a mole that has changed in shape/color or has an irregular border.

People can use this month to raise awareness about skin cancer and help people take action to prevent it - both at home and in the larger community, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services website. Ways to help grow awareness about skin cancer include; encouraging families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun, motivating teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV rays and why it's important to protect yourself and to identifying youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
