Laughter Is The Best Medicine, Recent Studies Claim

A Vanderbilt University study concludes that giggling for 15 minutes daily burns enough calories to shed up to five pounds of fat annually.

Recent studies suggest that laughter really is the best medicine. Researchers at the University of Oxford have written that people feel less pain after a good laugh because it may cause the body to release chemicals that act as a natural painkiller. A Leeds University team has said that good nursing and the occasional laugh is a better way to get the body healing than using the latest technology for leg ulcers. A Vanderbilt University study concludes that giggling for 15 minutes daily burns enough calories to shed up to five pounds of fat annually, and a big belly laugh uses about the same energy as walking more than half a mile.

A collaboration called Rx Laughter contends that humor can reduce pain and stimulate immune function in children with cancer, AIDS or diabetes, and in children receiving organ transplants and bone marrow treatments. And doctors at the University of Maryland found that people who fail to raise a smile in stressful or uncomfortable situations may be more likely to develop heart problems.
