Panelists included Graham Sattler of Indus Instruments, Dr. Merry Lindsey of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Dr. Corey Reynolds of Baylor College of Medicine.
Graham Sattler, Marketing and Product Development Manager of Indus Instruments, discussed why comprehensive physiological monitoring is so crucial in today's scientific research laboratories and how the MouseMonitor™ S offers greater consistency in procedures, better training opportunities for laboratory animal staff, an increase in survival rates and greater confidence in experimental data.
Merry Lindsey, Professor of Physiology and Medicine and the Director of the Jackson Center for Heart Research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, confirmed that reliable and accurate ECG recording as well as proper temperature control are critical requirements for her research on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their impact on cardiac remodeling. Dr. Lindsey, demonstrated how the ECG profile after LAD ligation provides crucial information about the success and extent of myocardial infarction - an important parameter in determining the efficacy of her in vivo murine models.
Corey Reynolds, Assistant Professor and Director of the Mouse Phenotyping Core at Baylor College of Medicine, shared his experience with the MouseMonitor™ S and reviewed how it is used as both a vital signs monitor and a platform for more precise physiological measurements. Dr. Reynolds highlighted recommendations from the National Research Council (NRC) in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals which suggests monitoring baseline vital signs like heart rate, core temperature and blood oxygenation. Dr. Reynolds stressed how important proper surgical monitoring is in the eyes of an organization's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) resulting in higher approval rates for protocol submissions.
