IASP Offers A World Suicide Prevention Day 2011 Toolkit

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) has prepared a toolkit that provides links to World Suicide Prevention Day resources and related Web sites.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsor World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) every year on September 10th.

IASP has prepared a World Suicide Prevention Day 2011 Toolkit that offers users easy access to World Suicide Prevention Day resources and related Web sites.

The Toolkit - a one-page PDF document - includes links to: the official WSPD brochure "Preventing Suicide in Multicultural Societies," the theme of this year's event, and a list of suggested activities to mark the Day.

Also included are links to World Suicide Prevention Day banners in over 40 languages. The IASP has created these banners so that bloggers and writers can help increase suicide prevention awareness locally and worldwide by writing about suicide and suicide prevention in their native languages. Individuals and companies can use the banners on their Web sites to promote World Suicide Prevention Day. Teachers can use these materials to increase awareness that suicide can be prevented. In addition, we offer these banners freely to organizations and groups that are holding events on the day.

The Toolkit also includes the World Suicide Prevention Day 2011 QR Code so that users can share the WSPD Web site on the cell phones, and a "Light a Candle at 8 PM" postcard that can be emailed to friends wishing to observe World Suicide Prevention Day in a personal way.

The World Health Organization estimates that about one million people die by suicide every year; this represents a "global" mortality rate of 16 per 100,000, or one death every 40 seconds, or about 3,000 deaths by suicide daily. For every person who dies by suicide, 20 or more attempt to end their lives. These figures do not reflect the impact that suicides have on family members, friends and colleagues.

The IASP expects that this year's activities will be held in over 40 countries around the world.
