Highlands Oncology Group To Recognize National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States, according to the CureSearch for Children's Cancer (CSCC). About 36 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. The average age of these children is six years-old. More than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year and about two in every 10,000 children in the United States are diagnosed, according to the CSCC.

The most common cancers among children are Leukemias, brain and central-nervous system cancers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the past 40 years, the overall survival rate for children's cancer has increased from 10 percent to more than 80 percent, according to the CSCC. One out of five children diagnosed with cancer do not survive and three out of five children who survive, suffer devastating effects such as secondary cancers, muscular difficulties and infertility, according to the CSCC.
