June is national Men's Health/Cancer Awareness Month, and as the area's leading cancer research facility, Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), supports cancer awareness and overall health awareness in men.
"The purpose of Men's Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys," according to the Men's Health Month website.
The most pervasive cancers among men in the U.S. are prostate, lung and colorectal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first most prevalent is prostate cancer, with about 137 men for every 100,000 men the U.S. developing the disease every year. However, the most deadly cancer among men in the U.S. is lung cancer, with about 62 men out of every 100,000 dying from lung cancer every year, according to the CDC.
It is important to realize the common early symptoms for these cancers in order to increase the likelihood of early detection. The early symptoms for prostate cancer include; a frequent need to urinate, difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine, a weak or interrupted urine stream, leaking of urine when laughing or coughing, inability to urinate standing up, a painful or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation and blood in urine or semen. The early symptoms of lung cancer include; a cough that doesn't go away, shortness of breath with activity, pain or aching in your shoulder, back, chest or arm, repeated infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia and any abnormal symptoms or a general decline in health.
HOG supports Men's Health Awareness Month and encourages men to strive for overall health. HOG also encourages all men to be aware of health issues, in particular ones that they are especially susceptible to, and to take the appropriate precautions in order to protect themselves against developing disease.
