Eating Disordered Individuals Offered New Tool For Recovery

Blog use extends care for individuals struggling with eating disorders. Beyond one-on-one visits with health professionals, reading and contributing to blogs with a focus on recovery assists patients between treatment sessions.

Note to editors. National Eating Disorder Awareness Week begins February 26.

Eating Disorder Individuals Offered A New Tool for Recovery

It's free of charge, and requires no transportation. And it's available 24/7, serviced by an expert in the treatment of eating disorders, with over 26 years in the field. It's as accessible from Hingham as it is in Melbourne, Australia.

For the past year and a half, those struggling with eating disorders-from compulsive overeating or binge eating disorder, to bulimia to anorexia-have had an additional tool in their fight for recovery.

Sure, they have their therapists/mental health counselors, their physicians and their dietitians. And yes, there are fabulous organizations, such as MEDA, the Multi Service Eating Disorder Association, offering groups for those tackling eating disorders. But now they have another voice of reason, a blog called Drop It And Eat (www.dropitandeat.blogspot.com), written by a South Shore dietitian, Lori Lieberman, RD, CDE, MPH, LDN.

What's A Blog, Anyway?

The simple answer is that a blog is like a themed magazine-a collection of articles centered about a topic. In Drop It And Eat, the focus is on normalizing eating and one's relationship with food. It provides practical strategies for breaking down unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, enabling readers to change their unhealthy behaviors. It corrects misinformation about carbs and fats, and BMI, for instance, with sound, scientific explanations to replace readers' nutrition myth-information. Drop It And Eat was recently recognized by Shape Magazine Online as a Top 10 Health Blog Written by Professionals.

What Role Does A Blog Play In Recovery From An Eating Disorder?

Besides providing correct information, in this era of nutrition info overload, visiting the blog helps readers feel understood. They feel someone gets it, that they are not alone. The blog provides an anonymous means to share thoughts and fears, in a way many might never do face-to-face in treatment.

It enlightens professionals treating eating disorders, as well. A wealth of information about readers' fears and thoughts is revealed, giving providers insights to help guide treatment.

And it serves as an additional support between sessions with providers, a positive resource to help strengthen their healthy thoughts and move them toward recovery.

What are the limitations of a blog for recovery?

The blog is not a replacement for individual treatment by health care providers. It does not address individuals' situations, except in general terms. But it provides support and encouragement for those in treatment, and for those contemplating getting help.
