Dr. Gordon T. Austin Praises New Efforts to Support U.S. Veterans

A new Hollywood initiative has launched to provide support to our troops, in the form of public service announcements as well as employment outreach. The initiative has won the endorsement of many veterans, including Dr. Gordon T. Austin.

2012 is a political election year, and it stands to be one of the most fiercely contested ones in recent memory; there are many pressing issues that cause disagreement not just among political parties, but among voters, as well. There are some issues, however, that most everyone agrees on, such as the importance of showing support to America's veterans. A new Hollywood initiative, called "Got Your 6," is seeking to do exactly that. The initiative has won the praise of many veterans, including Georgia's Dr. Gordon T. Austin.

The "Get Your 6" project is the brainchild of a large group of entertainment industry insiders, including agents, unions, movie studios, and TV networks. The purpose of Get Your 6 is to show support to U.S. veterans and their families, taking a multi-pronged approach and focusing on the million veterans expected to return home from Iraq and Afghanistan over the next few years.

The basic thrust of the endeavor is to help returning soldiers ease back into civilian life. This is done partly through employment and education initiatives. A big part of the initiative, though, is to call on American citizens to value and applaud the service and sacrifice of these veterans, something the Get Your 6 initiative will accomplish through scripted storylines and celerity PSAs.

The endeavor has unified the entertainment community, but it has also drawn praise from outsiders-including Dr. Gordon T. Austin, a passionate activist on behalf of U.S. troops and veterans. Dr. Austin, himself a naval veteran, endorses Get Your 6 "as an effort that unites all Americans in this election year when there appears to be so much that divides us."

Dr. Austin continues to say that the entire initiative is praiseworthy, but the employment outreach efforts may be the most important facets of Get Your 6. "One thing we can all agree on is that those men and women in uniform that protect this nation deserve our admiration and support, and providing jobs to returning veterans is one small way to start to repay our debt to them," he says.

The entertainment industry's support for this initiative is to be ongoing, but many of the public service announcements have already begun airing. These include appearances from Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael Douglas, and other familiar figures from film and TV.

Meanwhile, companies including Comcast and Disney have pledged to hire a thousand returning veterans apiece.

Dr. Gordon T. Austin is a United States Navy veteran, and he has proudly provided 38 years of service to his country. He currently devotes much of his time and attention to raising awareness and support for issues related to U.S. troops and veterans. In addition, Dr. Austin is a third-generation dentist who has loyally served the Carrollton, Georgia community for 25 years, as well as an Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
