Dallas Plumbing Company Celebrates 110 Years of Service

Dallas Plumbing Company reflects on milestone and its contribution to major landmarks - Fair Park, Highland Park Village, Texas Theatre.

This year represents a major milestone for Dallas Plumbing Company, one of the city's leading providers of both plumbing and air conditioning products and services, as the Company celebrates its 110th anniversary. Since its creation in 1903, Dallas Plumbing Company has survived and thrived as the oldest plumbing company in the area, spanning four generations of family ownership in two millennia.

"Dallas Plumbing Company is a company with humble beginnings, a rich history, and an exciting future," says John Downs, president of Dallas Plumbing Company and one of the third generation owners. "Only a small fraction of businesses from any industry achieve milestones such as 50, 75 or 100 years. The fact that we have thrived for 110 years, across two centuries, fills all of us with tremendous pride."

The Company joins an elite group of entities that have been serving DFW for 100+ years - the City of Highland Park, the Adolphus Hotel, Children's Medical Center and Southern Methodist University to name a few. Like these iconic local institutions, Dallas Plumbing Company has played a critical role in the development of the city's landscape.

In Highland Park and the Park Cities, the company originated plumbing and heating in many of the cities' landmark homes, serving these communities from the Dallas Plumbing Company longtime location on McKinney Avenue. Another significant landmark, Highland Park Village, was a Dallas Plumbing Company project in 1931. Today the Spanish style center is a premier shopping destination known around the world.

"We're especially excited to be experiencing a milestone year along with the City of Highland Park since we played an integral part of building its Highland Park Village," says Cindy Downs, Executive Vice President and fourth generation owner. "The work we've done on that property, as well as 80-plus years of continued service on dozens of landmark homes, gives us a special connection with this community."

Also at the beginning of the 1930s, Dallas Plumbing Company was honored to be part of the construction team responsible for the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff. The Theatre used a water-cooled system to make it the first theater in Dallas with air conditioning. In 1934, Dallas was selected host city for the Texas Centennial Exposition, celebrating the state's independence from Mexico. Among a labor force of 8000 workers, Dallas Plumbing Company helped build what is now Fair Park and which is a National Historic Landmark.

In the latter half of the 20th century, Dallas Plumbing Company played its role in building Harvey Hotels across North Texas. It had a hand in the creation of Dallas' Design District with its work on the Dallas Design Center in the early 1980s. And most recently, the Company has played an integral role in the renovations of the terminals at DFW Airport.
